Under-Nutrition is the major cause of deaths in children under age five,
and approximately 200 million children in this age group in the developing
world suffer from stunted growth as a result of chronic maternal and
childhood under-nutrition, according to a UNICEF report.
For most of us, hunger is short-term, with a simple and foreseeable
solution: easy access to a wide array of food and nutrition choices. But
for one-sixth of all of the people in the world, hunger is a daily,
inescapable reality.
Poverty is the major cause of the world hunger crisis. The regions across
the world that are subjected to extreme poverty conditions are at more
risk to have their terrible situation exacerbated by outside forces such
as natural disasters and war/conflict, thereby further deepening their
difficult situation.
About 183 million children are underweight for their age. According to
UNICEF, 25,000 children die each day due to poverty. And they "die quietly
in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny
and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these
dying multitudes even more invisible in death.
